Whether you enjoy collecting rare, valuable coins for their underlying value or do so as a way of reflecting on world history, your interest is sure to be piqued by the latest release from The Perth Mint. In conjunction with U.S. Money Reserve – the private distributor of gold, silver and platinum products – the mint has released the 65th Anniversary of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 2018 Proof Coin Set. Offered exclusively by U.S. Money Reserve in the U.S., only 203 complete sets will be available – and they will only be struck in 2018.
The low-mintage coin set commemorates the 65th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. When it took place on June 2, 1953, the event was viewed by more than 300 million people on televisions around the world. And it is still remembered as one of the most significant events of that century.
The set consists of three coins: A 2-ounce gold proof coin, a 1/4-ounce gold proof coin and a 1-ounce silver coin. These coins were struck by the Perth Mint of Australia out of 99.99-percent pure gold and 99.99-percent pure silver. All told, 250 of these coins will be minted. Of that total, 203 will be made available in the United States exclusively by U.S. Money Reserve, which is based in Austin, Texas. Founded in 2001, U.S. Money Reserve is one of the leading private distributors of U.S. government-issued gold, silver and platinum products.
Each set has been designated with the “First Strike” label, which is issued by the Professional Coin Grading Service, or PCGS. Each set is also certified in the highest available grades – either Proof 70, which is museum grade, or Proof 69, which is near-flawless grade. An individually-numbered certificate of authenticity is also included. In addition to being highly collectible, these coins are legal tender under the Australian Currency Act of 1965. Monetary denominations are imprinted onto the obverse side of each coin.
One of the things that make this set highly-collectible is the incredible artwork that has been employed in the design of the included coins. The obverse side of each coin, for example, features the famous Ian Rank-Broadly portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Along with it, the obverse side displays the monetary denomination of the coin and the year in which it was struck – in this case, 2018.
The reverse side of each coin displays the event that the set is intended to commemorate: the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953. As such, it displays the St. Edward’s Crown above a stylized shield. This side of the coin also displays images of the golden wattle, the floral emblem of Australia, along with the official flower of each of that country’s states and territories. Inscriptions on this side include “65,” “1953,” “2018,” “H.M. Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Anniversary” and “P,” the mintmark of the Perth Mint of Australia.
